The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride 2019

2019 marks the eighth anniversary of the global motorcycling phenomenon that is the Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride (DGR). The event takes place on Sunday 29th September and this year over 130,000 riders are expected to take part in over 700 towns and cities in 110 countries across the world. The DGR was inspired by an image of the TV character Don Draper from the hit series Mad Men. The suave Mr Draper was shown sitting astride a classic motorcycle whilst wearing one of his characteristically dapper suits. The image inspired Australian Mark Hawwa to create a themed motorcycle event with the aim of uniting riders of niche machines around a common theme. The event proved so popular that it has been held every year, on the last Sunday in September, ever since.

However, as well as being a celebration of motorcycling and self expression, the DGR has a more serious purpose which is to raise money for men’s health issues. In particular, for research into prostate cancer (the so called “silent killer” of men) and mental health, specifically male suicides – over 500,000 men commit suicide each year which equates to one every minute! We at Street Icons are proud to support the DGR and this year we will be taking part in the ride from Southend-on-Sea in England. Our curator will be donning his finest apparel and joining the other 100-plus riders for this local regional ride.

However, we want to do more than just participate in what will undoubtedly prove to be a fun day out. We want to raise a worthwhile sum of money for these extremely important causes. To that end we’ve come up with two initiatives; If you can’t participate in the ride itself but would like to be a part of it, you can sponsor our curator and your contribution will go directly to the DGR.

Alternatively, you can treat yourself to one of our fabulous new Street Icons t-shirts and we’ll donate 10% of the purchase price to the DGR:–1087

Both opportunities to raise vital funds for these worthy causes will run until 28th September 2019.
